Dr Deepak Goyal, the pioneer cartilage and sports knee surgeon, performed a live surgery today at ‘Saumya Arthroscopy and Sports Knee Clinic’.
A 19 years old girl suffered from near total loss of bone and cartilage from lateral femoral condyle (a bone in the knee joint). She underwent bony reconstruction 2 years ago by Dr Goyal. Today cartilage reconstruction was planned as 2nd stage procedure. Our clinic is thankful to the patient and relatives who agreed for the live surgery and broadcasting of the live surgery.
Prominent orthopaedic surgeons of the city were present to watch this rare surgery where patient’s own chondrocytes (cartilage cells) are cultured to 4 million cells and were implanted back into her knee. Dr Goyal performed this live surgery where he was assisted by senior Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Binoy Palkhiwala and second assistant Dr Gaurang Labana. The damaged area of the cartilage was quite big, 24 mm * 20 mm in size in weight bearing area of the knee joint. The cultured cells were implanted with fibrin gel based scaffold leading to nice coverage of the defect area by live chondrocytes.
The live surgery was followed by discussion on the indications, contraindications and tips of the surgical technique. (Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation- ACI)
